Today I realised I actually have never listened to a Led Zeppelin album yet I have Stars are Blind on my iPhone. It's this guy's fault about the Parisienne Issue. I guess it's on me to find out what happens when the levee breaks. At least I don't have any Brittany Spears*
I note this because Pearl Jam's Given To Fly came on and I remembered that PJ apparently accidentally nicked the riff of Led Zeppelin and I wondered what song it was...completely trustworthy wikipedia notes that Pearl Jam's guitarist Mike McCready stated, "It's probably some sort of rip off of it I'm sure...Whether it's conscious or unconscious but that was definitely one of the songs I was listening to for sure. Zeppelin was definitely an influence on that." The song he's talking about is Going To California which I did know and but have never made the connection. But Robert Plant and Pearl Jam did make a connection, took their chances on a big jet plane and performed Going to California and Given to Fly together.

Albums I actually have been listening to recently include Metallica's Death Magnetic which is a fine return to form musically. James Hetfield's singing is not as strong as previous albums and it's surprisingly obvious on the lead single, The Day That Never Comes. Don't get me started on the line "Love is a four letter word" which is atrocious on its own but Hetfield kills it with the vocal. The song is redeemed with a pretty sweet solo as have many other songs on the album.
A reviewer elsewhere noted Kirk Hammet is the glue that holds Metallica together and this album holds that out to be true. The best bit of the album is the instrumental Suicide and Redemption where 3 minutes and 30 seconds in, Kirk pulls out one of the best toned riffs he ever has and then Metallica collectively go crazy and throw everything they have into the song, with like about 50 riffs and a kitchen sink.
The song itself is like a hurricane, initially eating everything in its path with the melody in the middle being the calm eye and the violent pick up after that being the part of the storm that rips the corrugated iron off the roof and cuts a parked car in half with it. The song slows towards the end as it sort of looks around like Hurricane Katrina going, "yep, I sure fucked this place up good".
Another album is Easy Tiger by Ryan Adams. No, not the has been guy that sings Summer of '69 but Ryan Adams who did the awesome cover of Oasis' Wonderwall. Easy Tiger
is little bit rock, a little bit country. Like the tea add suggests, do try it.*I guess Hit Me Baby One More covered by Travis doesn't count...
