When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Croc vs. Hippo
This silly crocodile thought he was up for a friendly game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. Little did he realise he wasn't the player - he was one of those little white balls...
The image captures a moment of pure brutality in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. A crocodile made the fatal error of straying too close to a mother hippo and her calves. The mother wasn't alone; she was part of a massive pod of 50 hippos bathing in the river. The defensive instinct of the pod triggered instantly, resulting in a one-sided battle where the crocodile was killed.
It is a common mistake to view hippos as gentle, lazy river giants. In reality, they are responsible for more human fatalities in Africa than lions, elephants, or crocodiles combined.
Those jaws aren't just for show. A hippo can open its mouth 150 degrees and bite down with a force of nearly 2,000 PSI (pounds per square inch). To put that in perspective, that is enough force to snap a crocodile's spine like a twig or, as previously noted, crush a small car.
We would love to see how Grimlock would fair against such a beast!
