Welcome to Shape Dropper

Get ready to engage with a modern take on one of the most legendary and beloved video games ever created. Before you start dropping shapes, take a moment to understand the history of the titan you're about to tackle and review the operational parameters for success.

A Monumental History

The story of Tetris is as captivating as the game itself. It was born not in a corporate lab in Japan or Silicon Valley, but in the heart of the Soviet Union in 1984. Alexey Pajitnov, a brilliant AI researcher at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, created the game as a side project. Inspired by a childhood puzzle game called Pentominoes, he envisioned falling pieces made of four squares, which he called "Tetrominoes."

The game's addictive nature made it an instant hit among his colleagues, spreading like wildfire via floppy disks throughout the Soviet bloc. However, its journey to global stardom was a complex saga of licensing deals, legal battles, and international intrigue. It wasn't until a decade later, when Nintendo bundled Tetris with its revolutionary handheld console, the Game Boy, in 1989, that the game exploded into a worldwide phenomenon.

The success was unprecedented. The Game Boy's portability meant that millions of people could experience the hypnotic 'Tetris Effect' anywhere, anytime. To date, Tetris is one of the best-selling video games of all time, with hundreds of millions of copies sold across virtually every platform imaginable. Its simple, elegant design and challenging gameplay have ensured its place as a timeless classic, celebrated in art, music, and culture for decades.

How to Play

Your mission is simple, yet challenging. Geometric shapes will fall from the top of the game screen, known as "the well." Your objective is to manipulate these falling pieces to create solid horizontal lines of blocks without any gaps.

  • When a solid line is formed, it will disappear.
  • The blocks above the cleared line will shift down.
  • You will score points for every line you clear.
  • The game ends when the stack of shapes reaches the top of the well.

Controls (PC Keyboard):

  • Rotate Piece: Double-tap anywhere on the screen.

  • Hard Drop: Perform a quick "flick" downwards.

Tips for a High Score

Mastering the game requires more than just fast reflexes; it demands strategy and foresight. Here are some tips to elevate your game:

  • Play Flat: As a general rule, try to keep your stack as flat as possible. Avoid creating deep holes or tall, jagged spires that are hard to fill in. A level playing field gives you the most options for placing new pieces.
  • Always Know Your Next Piece: Your "NEXT" piece is displayed. This is the most crucial piece of information you have. Always be thinking one step ahead, planning where your next piece will go while you place your current one.
  • Build a "Well" for Four-Liners: The most effective way to score big is by clearing four lines at once. To do this, build your stack up neatly, leaving a single column empty on one side. When the long, straight "I" piece appears, drop it into your well to clear four lines and rack up huge points.
  • Don't Panic: When the pieces start falling faster, it's easy to make mistakes. Stay calm and focus on placing each piece as cleanly as possible. Sometimes, a single well-placed piece can fix a messy stack.

Good luck!
