Getting the Perfect Number
- Use a flexible measuring tape.
- Wrap it around your head exactly where you want the hat to rest.
- Typically, this is 1-2 cm (approx. 1/2 inch) above your ears.
- The tape should form a comfortable circle - not too tight, not too loose.
Understanding Crown Height
- Low Crown: Sits closer to the top of your head. Casual look.
- Mid Crown: The standard profile. Universally flattering.
- High Crown: A deeper fit. Ideal for "Long Oval" head shapes or for pulling down tight in windy weather.
*Note: Straw and wool felt hats are soft and will naturally mold to fit different head shapes over time.
Measuring Your Head - Guide
- Use a flexible measuring tape for accuracy.
- Wrap the tape around your head, positioning it where you'd like the hat to rest.
- Ensure a comfortable fit. The tape should form a circle around your head without being too tight.
- Record the measurement where the tape meets.
Fit Tips
- Keep in mind, hat fit is entirely a matter of personal preference. You’re the only one who can decide how you want your hat to sit, fit and how you want to wear it.
- We believe tighter fits are more suitable for those active moments in life – think long days at your favourite music festival or fun in the sun at the beach.
- For a more comfortable, extended wear (4+ hours), we recommend a looser fit that will sit lower on the head.
- The shape and style of a hat can vary the sizing and fit. We always recommend reading the size and fit guide for any hat you’re considering. This will help to ensure you’re able to select the perfect size for you.
- Unsure of sizing? A hat filler is a great addition because it can be used to tailor the size and fit of your new hat (and add comfort at the same time).
Expert Hat Sizing Insights
Mastering the Measurement: Finding the perfect hat size starts with an accurate measurement. While a flexible measuring tape provides the most precise head circumference in inches or centimeters, you can also use a piece of non-stretchy string and measure it against a ruler. Position the measure exactly where you want the hat to rest—typically 1/8 inch above the ears—to ensure your custom hat or fedora sits comfortably without sliding.
Head Shape Matters: Understanding your head shape is just as important as the size. Most sizing charts assume a "Round Oval" shape, but many people have a "Long Oval" head. If you often feel pressure on your forehead but gaps on the sides, you likely have a Long Oval shape. In this case, we often recommend sizing up and using a hat filler or sizing tape on the sides to customize the fit, ensuring the hat doesn't leave red marks or cause headaches.
Material & Break-in: Finally, consider the material of the hat. Soft materials like wool felt and fur felt tend to conform to your head shape over time, allowing for a "break-in" period where a snug fit becomes perfect. Stiffer materials like straw or structured leather offer less give, meaning you should prioritize comfort immediately. Using a hat size calculator that compares US, UK, and European sizes helps navigate these nuances across different brands and styles.
